No doubt Ringo Starr will have a little help from his friends celebrating his birthday. The former Beatle and two-time Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee turns 76 today.
Born Richard Starkey in 1940 in Liverpool, England, he overcame life-threatening illness as a kid — not once but twice. After leaving school at 15, he worked for a short time with the British Rail and then as an apprentice at an equipment manufacturer in his home town.
But his love of music inspired him to co-found his first band, the Eddie Clayton Skiffle Group in 1957. Starr was a member of a local group called Rory Storm and the Hurricanes when his future bandmates were forming the Beatles three years later. But in 1962, at the age of 22, Ringo replaced drummer Pete Best, becoming the oldest and youngest member of the Fab Four. The rest, as they say, is history.
