Last week, Hollywood lost two of its biggest icons from two generations of Tinseltown. After a string of big pop culture deaths this year, the world was rocked when Carrie Fisher passed away and her mother, two-time Walk of Famer Debbie Reynolds followed the very next day. According to Reynold’s son, Todd Fisher, his mother said not long before her death that she wanted to be with Carrie. Per an article on Yahoo, he said in the view of his family, “this is Debbie’s destiny.”
It’s not surprising to anyone who knew the mother-daughter duo’s legacy. They two shared many similarities throughout their lives. Both women were silver screen icons and both found fame at the tender age of 19 — Reynolds in the classic MGM musical “Singin’ in the Rain” and Fisher as Princess Leia “Star Wars.”
Their tumultuous but loving relationship was chronicled in Fisher’s semi-autobiographical novel “Postcards from the Edge,” which was adapted for the big screen with Shirley McLaine as the Reynolds-like mother and Meryl Streep playing the fictionalized Fisher. Anyone who has read the book or seen the film can attest to the deep-seated love that was always present despite the sometimes combative relationship the two real-life women shared.
Despite an acknowledge rift between Reynolds and Fisher over the years, the two became very close over the years. They lived on the same piece of land in Coldwater Canyon Drive and were separated by a small hill. The home itself has a rich Hollywood history having been occupied by “King Kong” star Robert Armstrong, legendary actress Bette Davis and Oscar-winning costume designer Edith Head.
Although Carrie Fisher didn’t have a Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, last week an anonymous fan inscribed “May the Force Be with You Always” on a blank star on the Boulevard. Her mother, on the other hand, has been honored twice. She received her first star for Motion Pictures on February 9, 1960. She was inducted a second time on January 13, 1997 for Live Performance.
