The 2016 Rio Olympics Begin
The 2016 Rio Olympics opening ceremony will air at 8 p.m. EST on Friday, August 5 at the Maracana Stadium. The event is expected to stray from the extravagant shows put on recently by London and Beijing. Rio officials are trying to be respectful of the current economic situation in Brazil, their worst recession since the ‘30s, and don’t think it’s proper to be opulent on this occasion. Executive producer Marko Balich said, “It is an analogue opening ceremony.”
But one element that won’t change is the parade of athletes. Since the entry placement is on order by the host city’s native language, Estados Unidos will be walking in the parade fairly close to the front. So tune in early to catch the 550 athletes representing Team USA including Missy Franklin, Aly Raisman, Gabby Douglas, Carmelo Anthony, Kevin Durant, Carli Lloyd, Simone Boles, Ryan Lochte, his teammate Michael Phelps and so many more.
Phelps, the most decorated Olympian of all time with 22 medals, has dominated four Olympics and come out of retirement in hopes of sweeping a fifth. It’s likely to be his final Games.
